மலையகத் தமிழர்கள் இன்னும் அடிமைத்தனத்தில்!
அம்னெஸ்டி இன்டர்நேஷனல் அதிர்ச்சியூட்டும் அறிக்கை — இலங்கையின் தேயிலைத் தோட்டங்களில் கட்டாய உழைப்பு அளவுக்கு சுரண்டல்
மலையகத் தமிழர்கள் — அரசால் கைவிடப்பட்ட அடிமைகள். அம்னெஸ்டி இன்டர்நேஷனல் 27 மே 2026 அன்று வெளியிட்ட "Abandoned by the state, trapped in private estates" என்ற அறிக்கை, இலங்கையின் தேயிலைத் தோட்டங்களில் வாழும் மலையகத் தமிழ் தொழிலாளர்களின் கொடுமையான நிலையை மீண்டும் உலகுக்கு நினைவூட்டியுள்ளது.
இந்த அறிக்கை சொல்லும் உண்மை மிகக் கொடூரமானது. தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக தேயிலைத் தோட்டங்களில் உழைக்கும் மலையகத் தமிழர்கள், இன்றும் அடிமைத்தனத்திற்கு அருகிலான நிலையில்தான் வாழ்கின்றனர். குறைந்த ஊதியம், மோசமான வாழ்க்கைத் தரம், பாதுகாப்பற்ற வேலைச் சூழல், குடிசை வீடுகள், கல்வி மற்றும் சுகாதார வசதிகளின்மை — இவை அவர்களின் அன்றாட யதார்த்தம்.
அரசு இவர்களைப் புறக்கணித்துள்ளது (Abandoned by the state) என்பது அம்னெஸ்டியின் மிக முக்கியமான கண்டனம். தனியார் தோட்ட உரிமையாளர்கள் இந்தத் தொழிலாளர்களை சுரண்டுவதை அரசு அனுமதித்து வருகிறது. சில சந்தர்ப்பங்களில் கட்டாய உழைப்பு (forced labour) அளவுக்கு நிலைமை மோசமடைந்துள்ளது.
ஈழத் தமிழர்களின் துயரம் மட்டுமல்ல, மலையகத் தமிழர்களின் துயரமும் இலங்கை அரசின் இனவாத, வர்க்கவாத கொள்கையின் விளைவுதான்.
இந்த அறிக்கை மீண்டும் ஒரு முறை நமக்கு நினைவூட்டுகிறது. மலையகத் தமிழர்கள் இலங்கையின் பொருளாதாரத்தைத் தோளில் சுமந்துகொண்டு, இன்றும் அடிமை வாழ்க்கை வாழ்கின்றனர். அவர்களின் உரிமைக்கான போராட்டம், ஈழத் தமிழர்களின் போராட்டத்துடன் இணைக்கப்பட வேண்டும். ஒடுக்கப்படும் அனைத்து தமிழர்களின் விடுதலையும் ஒன்றே.
Amnesty International's report released on 27 May 2026, titled "Abandoned by the state, trapped in private estates", has once again exposed the horrifying living and working conditions of Malaiyaha Tamil tea plantation workers in Sri Lanka.
Generation after generation, these Tamil workers have toiled in the tea estates, yet they continue to live in conditions close to modern-day slavery. Low wages, deplorable housing, lack of proper healthcare, denial of education, and dangerous working conditions remain their daily reality.
The most damning observation in the report is that the Sri Lankan state has completely abandoned these workers. Successive governments have turned a blind eye while private estate owners continue to exploit them ruthlessly. In some cases, the exploitation has reached the level of forced labour.
This report is a stark reminder that the oppression faced by Malaiyaha Tamils is not just an ethnic issue — it is deeply rooted in class exploitation and systemic discrimination.
The Tamil people, whether from the North-East or the Hill Country, continue to suffer under the same discriminatory structure of the Sri Lankan state. The Malaiyaha Tamils have carried the Sri Lankan economy on their shoulders for generations, yet they remain among the most neglected and exploited communities. Their struggle for dignity, land rights, and justice must be recognised as an inseparable part of the broader Tamil national struggle.
True liberation will only be achieved when all sections of the Tamil people — Eelam Tamils and Malaiyaha Tamils — unite against systemic oppression.
